JULIE CHEVALIER

     Fertility

You hugged your beliefs through the phases
of the moon, until adolescence spun
you onto whirling casements

where solemn magicians
fertilised fish eggs with newts ...
a gulf helped you navigate strange

nocturnal passages where you discovered
wonder under hedges from mimicry's
primordial stash.

You, the only wanderer in Golgotha
without a partner, in the garden near the pool
as the bronze statues of dancers hide.

Julie Chevalier writes poetry and short stories in Sydney. Her work has appeared in Island, Southerly, Blue Dog, Meanjin, Overland, Snorkel and Poetrix.
